Anti-influx drive
SHILLONG: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought response from Meghalaya DGP on a complaint lodged by city residents regarding the detention of 684 persons by police in November last year.
The matter relates to the drive of the police against influx and the persons of doubtful antecedents.
The NHRC received complaint from one Pawan Sharma and Arindom Chakraborty.
As per the complaint, police had illegally raided the houses of the poor and the down trodden and they were detained the whole night and the next day. They went hungry at night and could not go for daily work the next day.
During the drive conducted on November 1 last as many as 684 persons were picked up from areas located along the Fourth Furlong and Pynthorbah near the Polo Grounds
Later , 596 were released after they produced valid documents, and the remaining 88 were released with sureties.
After going through the complaint, the NHRC in a letter addressed to Meghalaya DGP recently said that the complaint should be transmitted to the concerned authority for necessary action within 8 weeks.
According to petition submitted to the NHRC chairman, the persons who were detained were genuine citizens.
The duo also urged NHRC to direct the State Government to compensate the affected people.
