Fixed security pickets set up to send Kokrajhar violence-displace back home

Guwahati: Fixed security pickets have been set up and rehabilitation and house building grants have
been sanctioned for the tribal people in Kokrajhar district of western Assam, who were displaced by violence in December last year.
Kokrajhar Deputy Commissioner Thaneswar Malakar informed that over 5000 people from both Adivasi and Bodo tribal communities who were displaced in the violence and arson that broke out in the wake of December 23, 2014 killing of Adivasi villagers by NDFB-S militants, have been sent back and lodged in make-shift relief camps in their native villages or in the neighbourhood where fixed security pickets have been set up.
These camps are at Khalashi (1665 persons), West Malegaon (2186 persons), Dwimuguri (479 persons), Amjhora (220 persons), North Panbari (162 persons), South Panbari (181 persons), Bashbari (155 persons) and Saralpara (110 persons).
These people belonging to 1090 families were rendered homeless in the violence. They were earlier
lodged in relief camps away from their villages, but now have been shifted to makeshift camps in their native areas.
The government has granted Rs 50,000 each for each of these families to build houses and cheques will be handed over to all of them by March 8, after which the make-shift camps would be closed down gradually whilesecurity pickets will remain or some time more.
Once their house are built, these violence-affected families will be provided with job opportunities under MNRE-GA to earn their livelihood for the time being as the government will stop supplying relief materials once they are re-settled. For the purpose already Rs 9,79,84,000 has been provided to the district administration. They will be engaged in works like rural roads building, canal digging, gravelling, restoration of traditional water bodies, making fishery tanks, erosion protection works etc.
The official informed that two MLAs from Kokrajhar district, Promila Rani Brahma and Majendra Narzary
have provided Rs 49.85 lakh each from their MLA areas development fund for providing work under the
MNREGA to these violence-affected people.
