SHILLONG: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma stressed on the need to increase the MBBS seats from 50 to 100 in NEIGRIHMS for optimum utilization of the available infrastructure. He urged the NEIGHRIMS authorities to aggressively pursue the matter with the Centre.
Speaking at the third annual day function of the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences here on Thursday, the Chief Minister recalled the magnanimity of Late Rajiv Gandhi in setting up NEIGRIHMS to bridge the gap in health services in the region and stressed on the need to do justice to the former Prime Minister’s efforts by promoting sustainable health services.
Coming from a medical background, Sangma also stressed on the need to expedite research and development in the health institute so that it could come to the aid of the State which is grappling to find vaccines for “all kinds of diseases around us.”
The Chief Minister also vouched for similar kind of support to be provided to both the public and private health sectors.
Urging young medical professionals to use their knowledge for the well being of the region, the Chief Minister announced that the foundation stone for International Centre for Performing Arts and Culture would be laid very soon.
Further, he mentioned that the State Government was trying its best to improve the Human Development Index through the Megha Health Insurance Scheme to take care of the health expenses of the entire population of the State.
Later, certificates were handed to the MBBS and B.Sc graduates as well as post graduates by the CM along with Prof. A. G. Ahangar, Director, NEIGRIHMS.
