SHILLONG: Meghalaya Police has come under severe criticism for the inability to trace out the Sub-Inspector Nurul Islam who was allegedly involved in the rape of two minor sisters at Ampati almost two years ago.
While taking part in the discussion on the Governor’s Address on Wednesday, NPP legislator James Sangma said that there was an increase in the incidents of crime against women and children.
“The perpetrators of crimes against women are at large and a case in point is Sub-Inspector Nurul Islam,” Sangma said.
The NPP legislator suspected that police were trying to protect Islam since he was a member of their fraternity.
“If a young girl who went missing in Delhi can be located after her photograph was uploaded on the social media, it is hard to believe that police cannot locate Islam,” Sangma said.
He also wondered whether the tainted Sub-Inspector was related to the Chief Minister since he (Mukul Sangma) had been instrumental in the transfer of the officer to his constituency Ampati.
“I was informed that he (Islam) was transferred to Ampati because of his strong moral values. May be he lost his moral values after his transfer,” Sangma said.
While expressing concern over the increase in the incidents of crime against women and children, Sangma said that the government had failed to address the problem since women and children were being exposed to various kinds of crimes and atrocities.
“What we see is a gloomy picture as police have proved to be incompetent in handling crimes against women,” he added.
The NPP legislator also slammed the government for its claim in the Governor’s Address that the law and order situation in the State was by and large peaceful. “The fact is that law and order in the State is deteriorating with each passing day. But, the government is not ready to admit this fact,” Sangma said.
