Report on landslides on Jorabat-Umiam four-lane highway submitted to NHAI

SHILLONG: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee, which conducted a study on the perennial problem of landslides along the Guwahati-Shillong highway, has recommended flattening of the hill slopes throughout the entire stretch of the Expressway to avoid future landslides.
Sources said that the report of the IIT Roorkee has been submitted to the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) which has begun analyzing the report.
Informing this, sources said that additional land would be required to flatten the hill     slopes as advised by the IIT.
Landslides were unheard of in the past on NH-40 but in recent times, several people have lost their lives on the picturesque Jorabat-Umiam Expressway owing to frequent landslides.
According to sources, as the rainy season is approaching, temporary measures such as construction of retaining walls have been undertaken along the road to avoid landslides.
Almost all the work on the Expressway has been completed sans the flyover at Lad Umroi, construction of which is going on in full swing.
Sources informed that the flyover work has been delayed due to the rains and would be completed shortly. However, construction of the Umsning Bypass is yet to be initiated.
