SHILLONG: At a time when  finding a place to park ones vehicles in the city is getting tougher by the day, the State Government is exploring few possibilities to tackle the menace, at least partially.
While the construction of a parking lot for two wheelers will commence shortly in the space in front of OB Shopping Mall, according to Principal Secretary, Urban Affairs, P Naik, the Government is also holding talks with the owner of a land near Crowborough hotel with a proposal to convert the area into a parking lot for both two and four wheelers.
The Government, Naik said, is also exploring possibilities of extending the parking lots near Ward’s Lake and Laitumkhrah main market.
Reacting to a query, the Principal Secretary, Urban Affairs said that the Government would also strictly enforce the Building Bye-Laws which say that all building owners should have parking facility.
It may be mentioned that Shillong has become congested over the years with the growth in infrastructure miserably failing to keep pace with the growth of population etc., in the city. The situation is especially grim in the main commercial areas of the city which are jostling for space.
Under such circumstances, the existing parking lots which are few and far between can hardly match the city’s growing demands.
Giving the land constraint inside the city, creating alternative space for parking vehicles would be a herculean task for the state government.
