Mookhep firing probe: Panel seeks extra time

SHILLONG: The one-man inquiry commission of D.P. Wahlang has sought additional time from the State Government to complete the probe into the Mookhep firing incident in Jaintia Hills.
Though the deadline for submission of the probe report was September 24, Wahlang has sought more time, an official source said.
Several public witnesses are likely to attend the hearing fixed by the official from October 5 to 15.
As the official heading the probe sought more time, the file related to the matter was sent to the chief minister for his consideration, the source added.
It was in March this year that   Wahlang was appointed to probe the death of two persons and injury to many others at Mookhep on September 24 last year during police firing on a crowd protesting against the apathy of the Government to address the concerns of the people following the NGT ban on coal mining.
Earlier, the State Government had rejected the magisterial inquiry report of East Jaintia Hills Addl. Deputy Commissioner S.S. Syiemlieh who had probed the cause of the incident.
