SHILLONG: Garo Hills region of the State has managed to escape from the provisions of the amended Bill passed by the Assembly on Thursday barring MLAs from holding the posts of MDCs.
During the GHADC polls conducted in 2009, two sitting legislators – Cherak Momin and Brigady Marak-had contested and won the election. But they have chosen not to seek re-election for the October 12 GHADC polls.
MPCC working president and senior Congress Minister Deborah Marak said that the trend of MLAs contesting the council polls is not as common as compared to the Khasi and Jaintia Hills.
Though there are no MLAs       contesting the October 12 GHADC polls, the wives of two sitting legislators – Zenith M Sangma from the Congress and Marathon Sangma (NCP) – are contesting the election.
In Khasi Hills as many as eight legislators were affected by the sudden implementation of the Bill barring the MLAs from holding the elected posts of MDCs.
