SHILLONG: The Interim Executive Committee of Meghalaya Indigenous Youth Federation (MIYF) Amlarem Circle, Jaiñtia Hills Division lauded and expressed its support to the High Court of Meghalaya for its June 30 judgment to stop all mining activities in the State.
“The ruling of the High Court gives a huge relief to the inhabitants of villages in the Dawki region of War-Jaiñtia. Those residents of the Dawki region whose population is not less than 25000- were dependent on their water supply for all purposes from the sources situated in and around the illegal mining areas of Nongtalang Dolloiship.
The illegal mining of limestone within or adjacent to the sources of water definitely destruct the underground natural reservoirs and causes calamities which affect the inhabitants of Dawki region. The mining activities does not only affect the drinking water but even the slopes of the terrain will turn dry and convert the fertile land into a wasteland in the coming days,” MIYF Amlarem Circle convener S Talang stated in a statement here on Monday.
He also said that the Federation takes this opportunity to thank the judiciary who has taken a historic judgment especially for the people of Dawki region of Amlarem Civil Sub-Division.
The State Government authority has always been neglecting its responsibilities as a welfare state to prevent the calamities which affects the common mass.
“At the same time, we would like to urge upon the High Court to permanently ban all mining activities in areas which fall under Amlarem to safeguard the interest of the interest of the common people of the region,” Talang said.
