SHILLONG: UDP legislator Paul Lyngdoh, who had raised the issue of rise in cases of road accidents due to drunken driving in the Assembly recently, has asked the Transport department to take heart from the recent road safety award presented to the State Government by the Centre.
After the issue of road accidents was raised in the recently concluded Autumn Session of the Assembly, Home Minister Roshan Warjri had informed that as many as 463 persons were killed during the past five years from 2010 till 2014 due to road accidents while another 1772 were injured.
“The award should remind the officials concerned and the department that a lot needs to be done to ensure road safety,” he said.
Earlier on Monday, Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways and Shipping, Nitin Gadkari, emphasized the need to put in place an action-oriented plan to bring down the number of road accidents in the country.
