SHILLONG: The Synjuk ki Nongsynshar Shnong ka Bri U Hynniewtrep (SNSBH), a body of traditional village heads, has slammed RTI activist Michael Syiem for filing a PIL questioning the relevance of Autonomous District Councils in the State.
The SNSBH argued that “minority indigenous communities” require institutions like the district council to safeguard and protect their interests.
“We are already a small race and the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution has given us the right to protect our land, culture and tradition,” SKNSKBH general secretary RL Blah said in a statement issued here on Thursday.
The executive committee of the village heads also urged the people to take part in a procession on October 30 demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Mukul Sangma.
Blah also informed that the Synjuk will convene a meeting to create awareness on various issues affecting the indigenous community at Jaiaw Shyiap, Lum Pyllon on Saturday.
Similar meetings will also be held in other parts of Khasi and Jaintia Hills.
