UP tops in post-graduate, graduate convicts and UTPs
Lucknow: In Uttar Pradesh, infamous for its muscle power, has now earned the dubious distinction of having maximum number of convicts and under trial prisoners who are graduate or post graduates. Official sources here on Saturday said that Uttar Pradesh had reported the highest number of postgraduate convicts (539) followed by Punjab (374) and Madhya Pradesh (226). A similar trend was observed among graduates, in which UP again maintained top position among convicts (1,522) followed by Punjab (1,226), Madhya Pradesh (614) and Tamil Nadu (487). A total of 35,202 convicts out of 1,31,157 lodged in various jails in the country were reported as illiterate and 56,469 were educated below high school. These two categories accounted for 26.8 per cent and 42.9 per cent respectively which together constitute 69.7 per cent of the total convicts. As per national crime record bureau data, Uttar Pradesh (7,444), Madhya Pradesh (5,146) and Punjab (2,706) have together accounted for 43.5 per cent of the total illiterate convicts. A total of 46.1 per cent of convicted inmates having education of below class X were lodged in four states, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh. (UNI)

1 dead, 5 injured in blast at Telegana chemical factory
Sangareddy (Telangana): A 20-year-old youth was killed while five others were injured in a reactor blast at a chemical factory in Medak district, police said on Saturday. The incident took place inside Saanvi Laboratories located at industrial area of Bontapalli village under Jinnaram police station limits when a group of workers were working and a reactor exploded at around 1:00 AM, Narsapur Police Station Circle inspector Tirupati Raju said. The deceased worker has been identified as Ahmed Laskur (20). The five injured were rushed to a nearby hospital from where they were later shifted to a hospital in Hyderabad. The condition of two workers was stated to be critical. A case has been registered with Jinnaram police and investigations into the incident have begun. (PTI)

GRP officers sentenced to 4-year imprisonment in bribery case
Kota (Rajasthan): An anti-corruption court here has sentenced two Government Railway Police (GRP) officers to four years of rigorous imprisonment in a 14-year-old bribery case. Anti-corruption court judge Raghvendra Kachwal on Friday sentenced the then Kota GRP Circle Inspector Dashrath Lal Meena and SI Noor Mohammad to four years of rigorous imprisonment. The judge also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on Meena, said Assistant Director Prosecution (ADP), ACB court, Ahashaan Ahamed said. SI Mohammad was fined a penalty of Rs 25,000. The Anti corruption Bureau (ACB), Kota arrested the SI from GRP station in Kota on March 31, 2001 while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 3,000 from Mohanlal Meena, a resident of Jharkhand village in Baran district, ADP Ahamed said. Two policemen killed in gunbattle with Maoists in Jharkhand
Ranchi: Two policemen were killed and one was injured in a gunbattle with Maoist guerrillas in Jharkhand’s Godda district on Saturday, police said. According to police, the gunbattle erupted duringg a combing operation that was launched based on intelligence input sin Sundarphari in Godda district, around 500 km from Ranchi.  One Maoist guerrilla was also injured in the gunbattle.  Police and the Maoist guerrillas exchanged fire for more than three hours.  Maoist guerrillas are active in 18 of Jharkhand’s 22 districts.
