Drug addicts held from MDC hostel, Garikhana

SHILLONG: The Seng Samla Mawprem (SSM) along with members of Nongsohphoh Dorbar Shnong apprehended three drug addicts and seized ‘heroin’ from their possession here on Saturday. According to police as many as 20 paper pouches containing drugs and a syringe were seized from the possession of those apprehended. The Seng Samla along with members of the Dorbar Shnong of Nongsohphoh raided several places supposedly frequented by drug addicts in Mawprem. The team also searched the MDC Hostel at Garikhana and apprehended one youth who was already under the influence of drugs. The apprehended youth then led the search team to others involved in selling and consumption of drugs. Speaking to media persons, president of Seng Samla Mawprem, Tansuk Toi said that after getting inputs that drug addicts frequent Garikhana, Ri-Bhoi Parking Lot, Jhalupara and MDC Hostel the organisation members along with the members of the Dorbar Shnong, Nongsohphoh, apprehended one Bansuklang Lyngdoh (19) from MDC Hostel. The Lumdiengjri police was also informed about the incident. Thereafter, acing on the inputs provided by Lyngdoh, the police team along with the NGO and traditional body members nabbed Suraj Tamang (32) and Elemark Patrick Marbaniang (18) from near BBS College. Police said that it has seized 11 pouches of paper from Tamang and nine from Marbaniang allegedly containing drugs and a syringe. “These two along with Bansuklang Lyngdoh allegedly consumed drugs and we suspect the seized powder may be heroin,” police said. According to police the two youths apprehended near BBS College confessed that they bought drugs from one Vijay Chettri. Meanwhile, the president of Seng Samla Mawprem questioned as to how the youths could use such substances inside the MDC hostel. “This place seems like a hideout for those selling and consuming drugs,” he said.
