NEHU students against scrapping of non-NET fellowship

Threaten to ‘lock down’ UGC-related offices

SHILLONG: Students from the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) have demanded the Ministry of Human Resource Development to ensure that the non-NET fellowships are not discontinued.
In a memorandum, the students also demanded a hike in non-NET fellowship.
The UGC recently decided to discontinue non-NET fellowships for MPhil and PhD students at Central universities from the next academic session.
Peeved by the decision the students’ body of NEHU said that if the demand of the students is not met within October 28 it will be compelled to lock all offices connected with the UGC. “We are getting inputs that the MHRD may take back this decision but only to provide non-NET fellowships to meritorious students. We strongly oppose any such move,” the students said.
Students in Delhi are also protesting the scrapping of fellowship awarded so far to non-National Eligibility Test (NET) research scholars.
In fact, hundreds of students from across varsities in Delhi, including Delhi University, JNU, Ambedkar University, were camping outside the office of UGC since Wednesday, demanding revoking of the decision.
