SHILLONG: Prime Minister Narendra Modi heaped praise on Meghalaya for carrying on with the mission of cleanliness for years with particular reference to Mawlynnong.
While addressing the nation during his bi- monthly ‘Mann Ki Baat’ programme aired by All India Radio on Sunday, the Prime Minister said he was amazed to know that there is a village called Mawlynnong in the remote North East region which is devoted to cleanliness since last several years.
“Mr Shanmuganathan, Governor of Meghalaya, has written a letter about Mawlynnong village. He informed that this village was awarded the cleanest village in Asia few years back. I was amazed to know that there is such a village in the remote North East,” Modi said.
According to the Prime Minister, Meghalaya is passionately carrying the mission of cleanliness for years and this “infuses confidence in us, that our country will surely be clean through the efforts of the countrymen”.
He said that that in 2019, when India will be celebrating the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, 125 crore people of the country can proudly say, “We have made India garbage free”.
