TURA: An elderly woman of over 60 years was trampled to death by a herd of wild elephants at Selbalgre village of Rongram block, near Tura, on Wednesday while working in her jhum field.
The incident took place at around 11 am when the 60 plus elderly lady, Walji M Sangma, was working in her jhum field harvesting her crops.
A herd of wild elephants reportedly entered the jhum fields and one of the pachyderms attacked her leading to her death.
Despite information being provided to the wildlife division of Garo Hills to take action it was alleged by the villagers that no member of the forest and wildlife department turned up for well over three long hours.
Ultimately, the villagers recovered the mangled body of the victim and brought it to her house before the wildlife teams arrived, it was reported.
Earlier on October 28, a school teacher was trampled to death by a wild herd of elephants when he tried to chase them away from his paddy field in Katuli village, near Boldamgre, South West Garo Hills
The incident took place when the teacher of Katuli school, Arbingstone Ch Marak (48) spotted a group of seven to eight wild elephants inside his paddy field gorging on the harvest. The father and son duo tried to scare and chase the herd away but in the process failed to notice another group of elephants a little distance away.
