SHILLONG: Yet again, wine lovers of the city got a taste of local wine that were displayed at the 13th Shillong Wine Festival organised by the Forever Young Club at the State Central Library premises here on Saturday.
The yearly festival provides a platform to local wine makers to display their products which are otherwise barred from being sold commercially. Apart from the local wine makers, those from Assam also took part in the festival where wine prepared from various fruits etc. were on display.
Talking to media persons, president, Forever Young Club, Michael Syiem lamented that the State Government is not doing enough to legalise wine making which would have provided employment opportunities to the people in the long run.
“Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh have legalized the wine making industry and at the same time are specializing in making wine out of Kiwi fruit. If the state permits the manufacturing and export of beer, then the same should apply to the wine industry,” Syiem argued.
“Legalising the (wine) industry will generate much needed revenue for the state. At the same time it will give boost to horticulture.”Meanwhile, the wine fest drew a decent crowd on Saturday.
