TURA: East Garo Hills police are in search for the body of an alleged extortionist who was reportedly lynched by a mob in Songsak area on Monday.
Villagers reportedly caught a member of an extortionist gang that was demanding money from the public at Soil Bonegre area of Songsak.
An angry mob is believed to have bludgeoned the accused and reportedly posted the pictures on social media.
However, on learning of the lynching from their sources, police dispatched teams to the area but failed to find the body.
“Even the villagers feigned ignorance about the incident despite the lynching having been reported. We are trying to locate the body but no villager is coming forward to reveal any detail,” said a police source.
Police sources mention that the alleged victim is Jasmine G Momin, a resident of Chinabat, who is said to have joined a criminal gang involved in extortion in the Songsak region.
The lynching comes just days after two Bangladeshi nationals were beaten to death for stealing a motorcycle in the Sibbari border region of South Garo Hills.
