SHILLONG: KHADC CEM P.N. Syiem has slammed the State government for nominating former MDC Irene Lyngdoh bypassing the council’s decision to nominate retired KHADC judge J. Reenbohn.
Speaking over phone from Delhi on Thursday, Syiem said the normal practice is that the CEM is elected by the members of the House and subsequentlythe KHADC recommends the name of the nominated member.
Pointing out that the list of members of the executive committee is sent to the Governor for his approval, Syiem said the same process is followed as far as the nominated MDC is concerned.
“I do not understand why the government has to interfere into the nomination process as the KHADC is an autonomous body and we are not under the State government,” he said.
Syiem made it clear that the KHADC went by the rule as far as the nomination of the member was concerned.
Since the matter is related to the Governor, he has to act independently under the Sixth Schedule and the State government cannot advise the Governor in this regard, Syiem asserted, even as he questioned the government interference despite the KHADC being autonomous.
