SHILLONG: After a lull, there is an unprecedented rise in the vehicle theft cases in parts of the state, even as the arrests of the culprits are negligible.
In one of the recent cases of vehicle theft, miscreants stole one Bolero pick-up vehicle (ML-04B-8460) including one SBBL gun and a cell phone that were kept inside the vehicle by the owner Biangmo Dkhar, from DongIaw Raliang village in West Jaintia Hills.
Ranging from scooter to bikes, the thieves have also targeted trucks and pickups.
Recently on December 11 at around 8 pm unknown miscreants stole one Tata Ace, pick-up truck (ML-05L-3976 (T) from Nongmynsong.  The miscreants have preferred to carry out thefts post darkness compared to the past when there were many vehicle theft cases during the day.
On December 11 night, unknown miscreants stole one motorcycle (ML-07A-8987) belonging to one Balsrang D Areng from Soil Bazar, Williamnagar East Garo Hills.
In the past, the BSF detected the smuggling of stolen bikes from Meghalaya to Bangladesh.
Though the police busted many inter-state gangs involved in the theft of vehicles, there was no respite as far as the continuation of the crime is concerned.
Moreover, the much hyped high security number plates installed in vehicles seem to be ineffective in protecting them.
