Pressure group leaders arrested for extortion

JOWAI: Two leaders of a West Jaintia Hills-based pressure group were arrested on Friday morning for trying to extort money.
The president and secretary of Niaw Wasa Youth Federation (NWYF) allegedly tried to extort and assaulted one Constantine Thubru of Namdong village when he came to a workshop at Lumsuwe, Ladmukhla to repair his vehicle at around 9:30 pm on Thursday.
Pynbiang Rymbai, the president and secretary, Palmon Sari, both of Mukhla village in West Jaintia Hills, demanded Rs 7 lakh from Thubru and allegedly threatened to kill him if he failed to pay the amount.
According to police, when the complainant refused to meet the demand, the inebriated pressure group leaders started assaulting him.
The victim, however, escaped and rushed to Ummulong Outpost where he lodged a complaint.
Police arrested both the accused early Friday morning and booked them under section 341,307, 384, 325, 506 and 34 of the IPC.
Both the accused were produced before the Court and remanded to 14 days judicial custody.
