SHILLONG: The State Government will inaugurate 48 units of the Urban Housing project at Lower Mawprem on Tuesday.
Urban Affairs Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh will inaugurate the housing units.
Officials informed that the State Government was sanctioned 168 units under the Urban Housing scheme for BPL families but it had to surrender the rest due to unavailability of land.
Officials also informed that the local Dorbar identified the urban poor for the project and the MUDA has only recommended the names of the beneficiaries.
The 48 dwelling units have been constructed over an area of 9,900 square feet and the work was taken up under the integrated slum development project for urban poor at an initial estimated cost of Rs 1.77 crore.
The foundation of the housing project was laid by Chief Minister Mukul Sangma on November 19, 2011.
Meanwhile, the Urban Affairs department is targeting to complete the construction of around 400 units in the Nongmynsong housing project within this month.
Sources informed that out of total 600 units, around 100 units, which were inaugurated long time back, had been handed over to beneficiaries.
Initially, Hindustan Prefab Limited (HPL) was assigned the work of implementing the project but later the firm abandoned the project.
After the termination of the contract with the HPL, Meghalaya Urban Development Authority (MUDA) was given the responsibility of completing the construction of the abandoned housing project under JNNURM in Nongmynsong on its own.
