Crackdown on illegal sale of liquor

SHILLONG: In a crackdown on illegal sale of liquor in the city, personnel from the Sadar police station arrested four women for engaging in the business at Keating Road here on Saturday night.
According to sources, the arrested women have been identified as Susan Marbaniang and Alisha Marbaniang of Demsei-niong, Betris Marbaniang of Keating Road and Uniky Mynsong of Lapalang.
Later, Susan Marbaniang was admitted to Shillong Civil Hospital.
The women were picked up by the team of policemen from Sadar police station headed by their officer in charge for selling of alcohol and causing nuisance in the area.
All have been forwarded to the Court and booked under section 110 of Meghalaya Police Act.
Sources said that Betris Marbaniang was also convicted earlier and the Court has been apprised of the same.
Police hoped that she will be penalised for the repeated offence as a deterrent to all involved in such illegal activities. The efforts of the police have been lauded by the headman and people of the locality.
In view of the upcoming 12th South Asian Games to be co-hosted by the city, police have intensified raids on liquor dens and have urged people not to indulge in drinking in public places under the influence of alcohol.
