Govt slammed for delaying eligibility test
SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Elementary Pre-service Trained Teachers’ Association has requested the State government to recruit trained teachers in government schools.
Expressing concern over the delay by the government in conducting the Meghalaya Teachers’ Eligibility Test (MLTET), Kiewshaphrang Thabah, president of the association, informed out of 900 trained teachers only 45 per cent have been recruited.
He revealed that some trained teachers have been forced to take up cooking and carpentry jobs after the government failed to look into the matter seriously.
“It was the Education minister who had delayed giving orders to initiate the conduct of examinations. There are numerous vacancies in the schools but so far no recruitment drive has been conducted,” he said.
“The government has wasted its resources as of now we see no effort on the part of the Government to conduct the examinations,” he added.
It may be reminded that the State Cabinet on May 29, 2015 had held a meeting and approved various proposals including conducting Teachers’ Eligibility Test (TET) for UP and LP teachers and after due deliberations on the proposal, the government decided to notify the process of recruitment as per norms and guidelines prescribed by NCTE and RTE Act, 2009 and approved the proposal of the Education department to conduct TET examination through an empowered committee headed by the Commissioner & Secretary, Education with DERT as the Secretary.
However, the TET is yet to be conducted.
