Guwahati: Assam chief minister and Congress stalwart Tarun Gogoi has alleged that the unprecedented situation that has precipitated in the famous Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi exposed the attempt by the BJP and the RSS to gag the freedom of speech of the varsity students.
In a statement here, Gogoi said assault on the JNU general secretary while he was being taken by police for production before the court, by the BJP-backed lawyers’ gang exposed the intolerant attitude of the ruling party in the Centre and the design of the RSS-BJP to saffronise the education institutions in the country.
Gogoi said such incidents were unprecedented in the history of the country and must be opposed and stopped in the interests of upholding the democratic traditions in the country.
“The people of the country know who killed Mahatma Gandhi. Those people had helped the British instead of taking part in the freedom movement in the country. It is hightime to launch tirade against the BJP government in the Centre in the interests of protecting the democratic values, freedom speech and strengthening the federal structure of the country,” Gogoi said.
He criticized the failure of Delhi police to abide by the guidelines of the Supreme Court to protect the JNU students’ union general secretary while he was in police custody and being taken to the court.
Gogoi pointed out that JNU was a very prestigious institution in the world and its products have earned laurels both within and outside the country and the latest unsavory developments in the varsity was very unfortunate and shameful.
