Accident case
SHILLONG: Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, whose vehicle was hit by a maxi cab driver earlier this month, on Tuesday asserted that he does not want to interfere in the due process of law.
Addressing media persons here, the chief minister said it was not his job to enforce the law and added that a chief minister should not interfere in the duty of law enforcing agencies saying that all the case have to be investigated through the process of law.
He, however, stated that he has asked the East Khasi Hills district police chief to complete the entire process at the earliest and went on to say that police should not have taken so much time in completing the investigation.
Commenting on the incident, he said he did not even have the time to inform about the accident to his wife and added that he continued with his journey immediately after the maxi cab had dashed his vehicle.
He also expressed concern over the growing number of accidents in the State saying there are lots of cases of rash and drunken driving which often lead to casualties.
He said that the police are expeditiously enforcing law which has resulted in fines up to lakhs of rupees being realized for traffic violations.
He further said that he would direct all the regional transport authorities in the State to conduct awareness programmes for commercial drivers so that they can be made aware of the traffic laws and the safety standards that need to be maintained while driving on the roads.
