NONGSTOIN: Mawshynrut based pressure groups–Western Youth Federation (WYF), WKSU, HANM and HNYF, closed down the office of Meghalaya Energy Corporation Ltd. (MeECL) at Riangdo Sub Station on Saturday alleging that the centre did not provide proper service to the people of the area.
The members of the four pressure groups led by WYF president, Wadbor Rynniaw gheraoed and shut down the MeECL office.
Addressing media persons at Riangdo later, Rynniaw alleged that the MeECL forced the people of the area to pay hefty bills irrespective of the limited power usage by them.
“We were surprised to see that houses with just three bulbs and ones with all amenities including items like TV, fridge and computer were made to pay the same amount as electricity bill every month,” the pressure group leader alleged stating that the bill amounts were all the more unjustified considering the frequent power cuts in the area.
Other pressure group leaders also alleged that meter readings in several electricity bills generated in the past months were faulty and the hike in bill amount did not correspond to the actual consumption.
Rynniaw added that the MeECL office in the area was functioning without adequate staff and full-fledged SDO and hence was shut down by the pressure group members.
