Guwahati: The proscribed ULFA (Independent) has tried to cast its spell in Assam election by issuing threat to the BJP and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) in case the parties failed to give clarification to certain issues raised by the outfit. Meanwhile, security of poll candidates and local prominent leaders of the BJP and AGP alliance have been furthered tightened especially in eastern Assam areas in view of the ULFA(I) threat.
The ULFA(I) led by fugitive commander-in-chief, Paresh Barua, in a statement has threatened the Assam state leadership of the BJP and the leadership of the AGP in case it failed to issue clarification about seven points raised by the outfit.
The outfit has warned the people against participating in election-related meetings of the BJP-AGP allianceThe DG of Assam Mukesh Sahay, however, stated security forces were making adequate security arrangement to thwart any threat to the poll process including threat, if any, to the poll candidates.
The BJP and AGP have been harping that this election was the last opportunity to protect the identity of indigenous people of Assam from the ever increasing number of illegal Bangladeshi migrants who enjoy patronage of the Congress and the AIUDF led by Badaruddin Ajmal. Both the parties have been holding series of election in eastern Assam every day ignoring the ULFA (I) threat. The campaign is being led by BJP’s workhorse and former Congress minister Himanta Bishwa Sarmah.
The ULFA(I) which now has influence only in certain pockets in eastern Assam districts bordering Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland , have warned the BJP’s state president and chief ministerial candidate, Sarbanada Sonowal and star campaigner Himanta Bishwa Sharma for providing party ticket in Margherita LAC to a surrendered ULFA man , Bhaskar Sarmah who have been accused by the ULFA(I) of being one of main executors of ‘secret killings’ (extra-judicial) killing of ULFA kin in the later 1990s when AGP was in power in Assam and BJP-led NDA was in power in the Centre.
The ULFA (I) has demanded public apology from these two leaders.The militant group asked the BJP and the AGP make public the whereabouts of 26 ULFA men who had gone untraced after Operation All Out carried out in Bhutan against ULFA in December, 2003.
The ULFA (I) demanded to know why the BJP leadership has remained silent on a recent derogatory comment made by the BJP MP from Dibrugarh, Rameswar Teli.
The ULFA has demanded assurance from the BJP-AGP alliance that another spell of ‘secret killings’ of ULFA kin would not be unleashed on Assam in case the alliance came to power after the polls.The ULFA(I) has asked the BJP to prove before people of Assam that former Assam CM and the AGP leader Prafulla Kumar Mahanta and AGP leader-turned BJP leader Chandra Mohan Patowary and Padma Hazarika were not involved ‘secret killings’ of innocent ULFA kin.
