SHILLONG: North Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner, S.C. Sadhu, has sounded an alert of heavy rainfall in parts of Garo Hills and in the neighbouring areas from April 5-8.
Pointing to the urgency of the matter, the deputy commissioner said that if there is continuous heavy rainfall for more than five hours then it should be deemed as an emergency situation.
The deputy commissioner has directed the Revenue and Disaster Management department and officers concerned to be alert and to remain in the district headquarter and also inform the public to be alert.
Sadhu cautioned the officers to respond to the situation by taking precautionary measures like evacuating people from the low lying areas to prevent loss of life and property.

Back in Shillong, a team of the Meghalaya State Legal Services Authority including the Special Secretary Law, Inspector General of Police, Additional Advocate General, Member Secretary, OSD, Legal Aid Counsels and Para-legal Volunteers visited the areas affected due to the storm which lashed parts of Shillong on Tuesday.
With the help of the local police, the team interacted with the victims and local headmen and assured assistance in the form of legal aid to those who needed help.
This was done as per the provision of Section 12 of the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 and in conformity with the National Legal Services Authority Scheme known as ‘scheme for legal services to disaster victims’.
