SHILLONG: A senior GNLA cadre carrying the designation of ‘general camp commander’ has deserted the outfit and surrendered before East Garo Hills police on Monday in the presence of Church elders.
GNLA ‘camp commander’ Sengrak M Sangma alias Ranggam had joined the outfit in April, 2011.
Following his surrender, Ranggam revealed that many GNLA leaders and cadres are ready to surrender but they are being kept under tight security amid death threats by Sohan himself.
According to Meghalaya Police PRO G.H.P. Raju, Ranggam got disillusioned with the senseless killings, kidnappings, extortions and rapes of women in remote villages, perpetrated by GNLA leaders and cadres.
“The surrendered cadre revealed that Rakkam, GNLA leader from Nongal Command, narrowly escaped with his life when police raided his camp in Duraband while he was raping a girl. Sohan did not punish Rakkam for his indiscipline since Rakkam belongs to   the Shira clan,” the police PRO stated, quoting the words of the surrendered cadre.
“Victimized women are scared to come to police to file complaints due to fear of GNLA. All GNLA leaders have many concubines; and whichever village they go, each leader compels the women of the village to sleep with them,” police revealed.
“Sohan has given all the money collected by GNLA to his wife and a close Mahari clan man for safe keeping. We all are working like slaves for our Garoland, but Sohan and his family has kept all the money,” the cadre told police.
He further revealed that Sohan has kept a large cache of weapons buried somewhere in Durama for selling them to others when he finally comes over ground. Crores of rupees have also been kept buried somewhere in Durama.
Sohan has also been running a false propaganda that any GNLA cadre who surrenders to police would be killed, the cadre said.
Due to intense police operations, all the GNLA camps in Durama Hills have been disbanded and the GNLA and ULFA cadres including Sohan D Shira have fled to South Garo Hills, the cadre revealed.
