SHILLONG: The BJP State Youth Wing has demanded that the Rajiv Gandhi Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Shillong should be renamed as A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Indian Institute of Management, Shillong.
Speaking to media persons here on Tuesday, BJP Youth Wing president Eugenstar Kurkalang said renaming the IIM after Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam would be a befitting tribute to the missile man who passed away while delivering a lecture in the institute last year.
“He (Dr. Kalam) was the ‘People’s President’ and had contributed a lot to the nation as a scientist. He was the only president who had visited the State at least
thrice time,” he recalled.
Kurkalang said that there are already various schemes implemented to honour late former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, and went on to say that they were not against the late prime minister’s name being attached with the institute.
Recalling that local pressure groups had registered strong protests against the decision to name the IIM after former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, Kurkalang said they would submit a proposal on the matter to Union Human Resources Development Minister Smriti Zubin Irani for necessary consideration.
Meanwhile, the BJP youth wing also lamented that the State government has not taken any measure to come up with some proposal to pay homage to Dr. Kalam, even after nearly one year of his demise.
