SHILLONG: The Social Organizations of Meghalaya against Land Alienation (SOMALA) has sent a petition to the Union Minister of State for Home, requesting him to keep in abeyance the implementation of the National Population Register in the Sixth Scheduled areas until the issue surrounding the influx of illegal migrants is sorted out.The SOMALA also did not take kindly media reports that enrolment for NPR will begin soon in Shillong. “In view of illegal immigration, we request the State Government to go slow with the enrolment until it is found acceptable to the locals,” the SOMALA said. Keeping a check on illegal migrants was the prime agenda during the campaigning for the Assam polls, the SOMALA said while lamenting the indifferent attitude on the issue in Meghalaya which was gearing up to implement NPR by May-June.
