New Delhi: At least two persons were killed and more than 70 others injured when a high intensity earth quake-measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, rocked Assam on Wednesday evening even as strong tremors shook the Eastern-North Eastern parts of the country and the bordering region of Myanmar.
Mild to moderate tremors were also felt in West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, parts of Uttar Pradesh and the national capital at 7:25 PM.
As continuous tremors struck the region at 7:25 PM, panic-stricken people rushed out of their homes and assembled in the open areas.
UNI reports from Assam confirmed that two people died in suburban Guwahati. A middle-aged old lady was trampled by a wild elephant as she      rushed out of her home, feeling tremors in Lokhra area of the city while another person was electrocuted by a snapped power line in north Guwahati.
More than 70 injured persons were admitted in various hospitals of the city.
The report quoting data of the website of United States Geological Survey, said the epicentre of the tremor was near Saging province in neighbouring Myanmar.
Cracks surfaced in many buildings and skyscrapers of Guwahati and adjoining areas.
Rail services were halted from Katihar junction of Bihar to Dibrugarh town of Upper Assam for more than half-an-hour after the tremor. The services resumed after security checks were carried on the entire tracks, senior railway officials informed.
In Manipur, six persons were injured, reports emerging   from Imphal said.
