BSF DG takes stock of boundary deal

SHILLONG: BSF Director General K.K. Sharma continued his tour of the border areas in Meghalaya by visiting Pyrdiwah in East Khasi Hills on Tuesday and meeting locals of the area while taking stock of the on-going delineation of the international boundary following the Land Boundary Agreement (LBA) between India and Bangladesh.
He also visited the remote Harai area in East Jaintia Hills before addressing BSF troops at a Sainik Sammelan at BSF Frontier Headquarters Shillong.
While addressing the officers and jawans of BSF, he exhorted them to maintain utmost vigil on border and ensure security of border and border population.
He emphasized on skill development programmes for border population and training for them for better employment.
Sharma praised the efforts of the Border Security Force at BOP Gumaghat where computer training is being imparted to senior school girls and other residents in border area.
He also distributed sweets to the locals and interacted with them. Aiming to help the border population to earn their livelihood the BSF chief emphasized on increasing the feeling of brotherhood and fraternity between BSF troops and locals.
“The cooperation will lead to reduction in criminal activities across borders as improved financial conditions at homes will prevent youths from indulging in criminal activities,” he said.
While returning to Shillong, Sharma paid a visit to Ramakrishna Mission Higher Secondary School, Cherrapunjee and motivated the students to join the armed forces.
Renu Sharma, President, BSF Wives Welfare Association (BWWA) also accompanied the BSF DG during his Shillong visit. She visited welfare centres and BWWA centres at Umpling and Mawpat campuses of BSF and interacted with the BSF ladies.
She encouraged the ladies to participate in social activities for uplift of women in the society. She also emphasized over the women empowerment and skill development. She visited BSF play school Ankur at Umpling.
Before leaving for Guwahati, the DG laid the foundation stone of the administrative block at Frontier headquarters Shillong.
