SHILLONG: A case of alleged police highh-andedness and brutality has come to light after a 30-year-old man from Mawlong in West Khasi Hills claimed that he was ‘physically and mentally tortured’ by cops of Mairang police station for simply enquiring about a case related to the harassment of a girl by some people.
Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, the victim, Donboklang Lyngdoh Mawlong, said that the Officer in-charge of Mairang Police Station, abused and assaulted him to the extent that he landed at the Tirot Singh Memorial Hospital, Mairang for treatment.
“I was requested by the family members of the harassed girl to accompany them to the Mairang Police Station on May 6. On enquiring about the matter, the Officer in-charge, A. Thabah abused me and beat me up injuring my head and face. I also lost some teeth in the assault,” he said adding that while the OC alone assaulted him at the police station, two other policemen joined the act when he was taken for a medical checkup.
“The incident happened at 10:20 am and I was released at 6 pm,” Lyngdoh said.
According to him, the misery did not end there. The concerned doctor at Tirot Singh Memorial Hospital, Ignacius Ryntathiang allegedly refused to hand him over his medical reports.
“He asked me to collect the report from the police station,” Mawlong claimed adding that he was discharged from the hospital on May 11.
Meanwhile, West Khasi Hills SP, Sylvester Nongtnger said that the matter is under inquiry.
