Govt ropes in Kolkata hospital under MHIS

Beneficiaries can now avail treatment at Apollo Gleneagles Hospital

SHILLONG: With an aim to ensure that people from the State have access to the best doctors and medical facilities, the State government has roped in Apollo Gleneagles Hospitals, Kolkata under the ambit of the Meghalaya Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS) thus paving way for specialists to fly down to Shillong and other district headquarters on a regular basis for the benefit of lakhs in Meghalaya.
As part of the programme, three renowned doctors from Apollo, Kolkata – Dr. Suvro Banerjee, Consultant Interventional Cardiologist, Dr. Binod Kumar Singhania, Consultant Neurosurgeon and Dr. Shankar Loharuka, Consultant Neurologist – were in the city on Tuesday to offer their expert services to patients from the city.
Over 350 patients benefitted from the presence of these doctors at the Shillong Civil Hospital on Tuesday.
Later, during an interaction with media persons the doctors informed that it was the endeavor of Apollo Gleneagles, Kolkata to cater to the patients of Meghalaya who are in need of “tertiary care” and specialists from the hospital will visit the State on a regular basis to offer their services to the patients.
Anybody having a MHIS card will be able to avail the services of such specialists and arrangements are being made to ensure that patients who need to follow up on their cases have access to the doctors through the telemedicine facility among others.
The doctors informed that Apollo Gleneagles, Kolkata specializes in cardiac and neurology cases with the line of treatment matching the best in the world and patients from the State can avail the benefit of such facilities with the help of their MHIS cards. State government employees are     also entitled to the benefits.
“The patients will be asked to travel down to Kolkata for specialized treatment as and when the need arises,” stated Dr. Loharuka adding that the doctors’ focus will be more on prevention than cure.
Briefing more on the facilities available in the hospital, Dr. Singhania said complex brain tumors are operated upon in the hospital which has the latest high end gadgets specially meant for such tasks.
The hospital also specializes in surgeries of the spine and knee, he informed while observing that such problems were common in the Hill State.
A dedicated stroke unit was also available for the patients, he added.
Dr. Banerjee, meanwhile, dwelt at length on the cardio facilities available in the health institute.
