SHILLONG: Along with their counterparts in Assam and the rest of the country, BJP workers and supporters in the city celebrated the party’s landslide victory in the neighboring state with great enthusiasm and zeal here on Thursday.
As soon as the news of Congress’ decimation in Assam trickled down, the BJP’s Bivar Road office witnessed bursting of crackers by the supporters.
Speaking to reporters, vice president of the BJP’s state unit, Banshai Khongwir said that the victory gave the party a much needed boost in Meghalaya in the run up to the 2018 Assembly election.
“The BJP does not have any representative in the State Legislature, yet the victory in Assam gives us a lot of hope for the future,” he said while also congratulating Conrad Sangma for his win in the Tura by-poll.
Meanwhile David Kharsati, general secretary of the BJP’s State unit, said that Conrad Sangma’s victory is a clear indication that the Mukul Sangma-led Congress faced anti-incumbency factor in the State.
“The people of Garo Hills said it loud and clear that they want change. The victory is also a tribute to late Purno Sangma who had built up a political image and stature to rise to the post of Speaker,” he said.
On the party’s victory in Assam he said that the people of the neighboring state have taught the rest of the North East to rise against corruption.
“The results also proved that people have welcomed the policy and programmes of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” he added.
