SHILLONG: Taking a leaf out of the Central Board of Secondary Education’s (CBSE) book, the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBoSE) is all set to include financial education in its school curriculum.
Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, Commissioner and Secretary, Education EP Kharbhih, said that the “pilot project will be initiated in 100 schools (60 in Khasi-Jaintia Hills and 40 in Garo Hills) to begin with” and lead schools will be identified thereafter.
“Workbooks (for financial education being prepared in Delhi) will have to be contextualized to suit local aspirations. It will then be reviewed by the Directorate of Educational Research and Training (DERT) after which it will be sent to the Government for the latter to see that the MBoSE implements it,” he said earlier.
“The workbooks will not be an additional burden on the students for it will not be included in the tests. The students will find it interesting as it will equip them with financial knowledge,” Kharbhih said.
The course requires six-seven classes from 6th-10th standard and MBoSE is looking forward to start in the current academic session, mid-August or September.
Meanwhile, the National Center for Financial Education (NCFE), which organised a sensitization programme on Financial Education: Benefits and Importance here on Thursday, will also train teachers on financial literacy by organizing a two-day “Financial Education Training Programme” for 250 teachers from various schools of the State.
