Condolences pour in for Fr Sngi

SHILLONG: The death of Father Sylvanus Sngi Lyngdoh was grieved by several organizations besides the general public.
Expressing grief at the death of the noted spiritual leader from the State, the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), central body on Sunday said that the former had been a great support for the union.
Mawlai MDC PT Sawkmie also condoled the death of Fr Sngi. He stated that Fr Sngi’s death was a great loss to the indigenous people and the State as a whole. He also conveyed his condolence to the family members of the deceased.
Meanwhile, the Seng Biria U Khasi (SBUK) while expressing profound sorrow at the passing away of Fr Sngi said that the latter’s dedication to the cause of serving the poor and the downtrodden is exemplary.
“He also supported the programmes of SBUK during the organisation’s early years of existence,” it recollected while extending condolence to the bereaved family members of the deceased.
The State unit of the BJP also expressed sorrow over the demise of the spiritual leader.
The party, which observed two minutes’ silence as a mark of respect to the departed soul, lauded Fr Sngi’s contribution to the society.
The BJP also offered condolences to his family members, the Salesian Ministry and the “Catholic brethren as a whole”.
The Grand Council of Chiefs of Meghalaya also condoled the demise of Fr Sngi Lyngdoh whom they called the “Moses” of Meghalaya.
“His journey of life has been an inspiration to the people of Meghalaya,” said John F Kharshiing, chairman, the Grand Councils of Chiefs of Meghalaya.
The Meghalaya State Council of Communist Party of India also expressed sorrow over the death.
“Late Fr. Sngi has left for his heavenly abode and left behind a vacuum which will be very difficult to fill. Besides his role as a Church leader he has also contributed immensely to the socio- cultural development of the local tribals especially the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo communities of the State,” the party said in a statement.
