TURA: Social Welfare Minister Deborah Marak has spread the significance of the green campaign to each locality of her constituency by giving away over a dozen factory made dustbins to stop littering in public places.
The minister visited several localities of Williamnagar town on Thursday to hand over to the local committees several large Sintex dustbins for the public to collect their waste so as to avoid dumping of garbage on to roads and drains. According to the minister, the idea behind the distribution of the bins, reportedly procured from her personal funds, is to spread awareness on the importance of a clean Williamnagar.
“Very often we disregard the importance of a clean environment and there is a tendency to dump waste, biodegradable or otherwise, into fertile soil, drains and streams which in the long run leads to contamination of soil and water. This ultimately leads to health hazards for the people who have access to the water and the soil which is already toxic. We need to check this menace before it gets out of control,” Marak said.
