TURA: A film depicting the pineapple trade in Garo Hills, where the farmers receive a raw deal in pricing despite the organic fruit being one of the most sought after commodities in the country, has been released in Tikrikilla, West Garo Hills.
The launching of the film on the organic fruit, locally called ‘Anaros’ at Tikrikilla assumes significance since the entire region is famous for its cultivation with traders and middlemen from across the country making a beeline to woo farmers at the weekly market in Chibinang- the hub of the pineapple trade in Garo Hills.
The film, aptly titled “A’songni Janera” (Mirror of the land) directed by Garo filmmaker and actor Roni Sangma, was premiered at Tikrikilla in an open air show viewed by several thousand people.
“The film highlights the plight of the Garo pineapple farmers who are deprived of their price while the middlemen make the profit,” said director Roni Sangma.
Producer and script writer Fr Benoy Joseph revealed that the film exposes what is happening in society including corruption, militancy, exploitation and injustice.
Director and actor Roni Sangma added, “We need to encourage and support film makers. The government should also look at promoting Garo Hills through its films which showcase it through the silver lens.”
