Nongmynsong housing project

SHILLONG: The State government is contemplating to apply for a loan from the Housing and Urban Development Corporation Ltd. (HUDCO) to complete the housing scheme at Nongmynsong at the earliest.
Government officials on Thursday informed that talks were on with HUDCO to ensure that the corporation sanctions the loan and the project is completed at the earliest.
Reacting to a query, the officials informed that the State government was compelled to approach HUDCO considering the fact that the project was facing time and cost overrun.
According to the officials, construction of another 160 units at the Nongmynsong site was underway.
It is learnt that the government is targeting to complete the second phase of the project by January next year.
Earlier this year, altogether 164 units were inaugurated in the housing complex out of the total of 600 dwelling units planned for the benefit of the urban poor.
The project has gone through several ups and downs. Initially it was Hindustan Prefab Limited (HPL) which was assigned the work for implementing the project.
Later, the State government terminated HPL’s contract and Meghalaya Urban Development Authority (MUDA) was given the responsibility of completing the construction of the abandoned housing project under JNNURM in Nongmynsong on its own.
