Wansuk calls for better air links in NE

NEWDELHI: Rajya Sabha Member, Wansuk Syiem on Wednesday criticized the Centre for ignoring the landlocked North East in terms of air connectivity and for not improving the main airport at Guwahati.
The Rajya Sabha Member also stressed the need of expanding and improving the only operational airport at Shillong.
Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport at Guwahati has been declared as an International Airport and there is tremendous increase in traffic, Wansuk said in the Rajya Sabaha on Wednesday in a special mention.
But the facilities remain the same what was when it was a domestic one, she said, adding that Guwahati airport is a hub for domestic flights to Northeast and it also provides international flight services.
She also reminded that the new aviation policy recommends cheaper and smoother flights between tire two and tire three towns and cities.
“There is a need for deploying smaller aircraft in the region considering the small size of the air traffic as per Rohit Nandan Committee report”, she said.
