SHILLONG: The lady imposter, Evangeline Kharbuli (39), who posed as a police officer and duped over 450 youths in Mairang promising jobs after collecting over Rs 2 crore, may land up in more trouble as a fresh FIR was filed against her.
What surprised the West Khasi Hills police was that the accused easily secured bail after she fell ill soon after her arrest on July 14.
Sources said on Friday that later she was admitted at Shillong Civil Hospital.
After her release, she went to NEIGRIHMS for treatment, but the doctor did not find any serious complications, sources added.
The accused is currently at her residence at Mawlai Kyntonmassar.
However, the fresh FIR filed by CSWO president Agnes Kharshiing on Friday in Laitumkhrah police station said that Kharbuli has been posing as SI of Meghalaya wearing the uniform of a police officer along with stars and name plate
“We were also told by one Shanbor Mawlong that he and his relative had met her in police uniform at Dhanketi, sometime in October 2015”, the FIR said, while adding that this act of is with a clear intention to cheat many unsuspecting job seekers especially from the rural areas.
“She has worn the police uniform, when she is not a police officer, hence we urge that she be booked as per law, for cheating, for fraudulently using the uniform to mislead and cheat the innocent public, for procurement of a police uniform, which tantamount to criminal conspiracy, along with any one providing her with the uniform, by which she is able to fraud and cheat innocent public”, the FIR added. According to the FIR, her action to pose as a law enforcer to cheat and fraud and cause harm to many and also defame the police force of the state is to be taken seriously by the investigating authority, “as she may also have influential links which give her the courage to wear a uniform which was never allotted to her legally and if not taken seriously many may follow suit”.
Anyone trying to influence the investigation may also be booked for obstructing a fair investigation, as such action of impersonating as a law enforcer is grave and may have caused harm to many and this misuse of the uniform may have been in many occasions and not only to provide jobs, the FIR alleged.
Proper investigation was also sought to find out from where she procured the uniform and stars and also to examine the CCTV footage at Dhanketi where money was transacted between Shanbor Mawlong and the accused in October 2015.
Mawlong hailing from Langtor Village, West Khasi Hills had filed the FIR which resulted in the arrest of Kharbuli.
Sources said that Mawlong met her through a friend near Mawdiangdiang sometime in September 2015, and she offered help to get jobs to many rural villagers.
Trusting the lady who was well accepted, after she met him and his relative once at Dhankheti in police uniform after coming in a police gypsy, he had no doubt that she would cheat.
After much delay in providing job even after the payment was made, Mawlong made her sign an agreement to ensure that over Rs 2.4 crore is returned.
The money collected by Mawlong was given to the lady in many places in city including near Civil Hospital, Keatinge Road, Polo near Bus stand, and Dhankheti.
Later, after much persuasion, another agreement was made thereby she gave a scorpio car worth Rs 10 lakh bought with cash from Stanley Roy Construction to Mawlong as security in case she cheated.
On May 10, 2016, after a separate agreement, another car was given to Mawlong.
However, later, due to much delay and pressure from job seekers, Mawlong filed the FIR against the imposter on July 14.
