Teachers’ Day special programme

SHILLONG: An interactive programme with principals and students of schools and colleges was held as part of the Teachers’ Day celebration at Raj Bhavan on Saturday.
Speaking on the occasion, Governor V. Shanmuganathan said, “Teachers are a great source of inspiration, and we dedicate this occasion and remember our teachers across the country who are actively engaged in building and strengthening the intellectual and ethical foundations of our children.”
Highlighting the role of teachers in shaping the future of students, the Governor said, “A teacher treats students as his/her own children and makes them learn from their experience. Teachers are the torch-bearers of our society and to imagine a society without teachers is impossible.”
“I believe that more than ever, today we need inspired teachers to instill in our children the values of sacrifice, tolerance, plurality, understanding and compassion, and the responsibility of producing conscious and intellectual citizens, who build the future of our nation, lies in the hands of our teachers,” he added.
The Governor interacted with the teachers and distributed prizes to the winners of the  Teachers’ Day essay competition.
Shubhankar Choudhury of Laban Bengalee Boys’ Higher Secondary School bagged the first prize while Lydia Grace Sawian of Pine Mount School and Banteilang Hahshah of Pearly Dew Higher Secondary School were the first and second runners-up, respectively. The Governor also distributed Commendation Certificates to 20 students and mementos to teachers.
