TURA: Thousands of Catholics joined Bishop Andrew Marak in a special church service on Sunday to mark the sainthood of Mother Teresa.
It was a celebration in Tura as life-size portraits of the Mother could be seen outside the Catholic Church and other dioceses. Mother Teresa was canonised by Pope Francis in the Vatican on Sunday.
Bishop Andrew conducted an open mass at Sacred Heart Church in Chandmari here to accommodate the several thousand devotees who came for the special service in honour of Mother Teresa. Bishop Andrew, in his homily, spoke about the Mother’s service to the poor and the neglected.
“Mother Teresa gave her entire life to serve the poor and the needy. She welcomed everyone who came to her. She was truly very special and a gift of God,” said Bishop Andrew.
Missionaries of Charity, the order formed by Mother Teresa, started work in Garo Hills 31 years ago.
It runs a home for women and orphans in Tura and another home in Williamnagar for men.
Members of Missionaries of Charity visit the poor regularly and extend support.
