NONGPOH: FKJGP members from Ri Bhoi led by their general secretary Dundee Cliff Nongsiej on Tuesday carried out an inspection at the cattle market located at Khanapara to try and find out reasons for the frequent hike in the price of beef in the State and to ascertain if the cattle supplied was safe for consumption.
During the inspection vice president of Khasi Jaintia Butchers Welfare Association (KJBWA), Generous Warlarpih claimed that the frequent hike was due to shortage in supply of cattle which is being smuggled to neighbouring Bangladesh in large number. Commenting on the safety aspect, Warlarpih said that there is no veterinary doctor stationed to examine the cattle before they are bought by butchers.
Warlarpih also informed that the Khasi Jaintia Butchers Welfare Association (KJBWA) was facing a lot of problems due to the apathy of the state government on several issues.
“The government is not recognizing the Association Transit Pass which would immensely help in tackling illegal smuggling of cattle to Bangladesh,” he claimed.
Nongsiej while expressing concern over the deplorable state of things said that the Federation will take up the matter with the state government and the concerned department.
The FKJGP also demanded the concerned authority to deploy a veterinary doctor at the market so as to ensure that the cattle supplied to the state for consumption is safe and free from disease.
