‘Rural sports infrastructure to be improved’

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday directed Deputy Commissioners of districts affected by rice swarming caterpillars to personally inspect and assess the damage caused to farm lands with the District Agricultural Officers concerned.
The state has been severely affected by rice swarming caterpillars, which have destroyed paddy spread over thousands of hectares in ten districts and the Chief Minister has directed the Deputy Commissioners to take necessary action to control the problem.
Sonowal said in a statement that the state government has taken the matter seriously and all efforts have been made for swift and immediate action to control the situation.
“The Deputy Commissioners have been directed to go for field verification so that the caterpillar menace can be prevented from affecting more farming lands,” he said. Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday said rural sports infrastructure must be improved to encourage and nurture sporting talents in the interior and remote areas of the state.
“The state government is keen to develop sporting facilities in the rural areas of the state and plans are in place to carry out work towards this direction,” the Chief Minister said at a meeting in Dibrugarh on Tuesday.
Sonowal directed senior officials of Sports and Youth Welfare, Public Works Department and Cultural Affairs departments to initiate action for developing rural sporting infrastructure in a planned manner.
Issues related to the proposed sports complex at Bindhakata Mulukgaon in Dibrugarh district were discussed and the Chief Minister directed Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner along with all other officials responsible for the construction of the sports complex to ensure timely completion of the project.
The Chief Minister also reviewed activities of Sports and Youth Welfare, PWD and Cultural Affairs departments of Dibrugarh district.
The meeting was attended by Chabua MLA Binod Hazarika, Dibrugarh Deputy Commissioner Loya Madhuri and other senior officials of various departments. (PTI)
