Amendment bills on Parl Secretaries, MLAs’ allowances approved

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on Friday brought an amendment to the Meghalaya Parliamentary Secretaries (Appointment, Salaries, Allowances and Miscellaneous Provisions (Amendment) Bill, 2014.
As per the Act, a Parliamentary Secretary will discharge functions and perform duties as may be assigned by the Chief Minister for effective and regular monitoring of the development works of the departments from time to time.
The Act also says a parliamentary secretary will be entitled to salaries and allowance as per the Legislative Assembly of Meghalaya (Members Salaries and Allowances) Act, 1972.
The amended Act will have more clarity on the duties of parliamentary secretaries, utilisation of services and regular monitoring of development works under various departments.
The Assembly on the last day of the autumn session also passed the Legislative Assembly of Meghalaya (Members Salaries and Allowances) (Amendment) Bill, 2016, to have more clarity on daily allowance as prescribed in Clause (b) and attending duties in various Committees of the House.
With this amendment, a member of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly will be entitled to daily allowances of Rs 600 per day for attending the Committees of the House.
Both the Bills were moved by Minister in charge Parliamentary Affairs MM Danggo and the bills were passed on the last day of the session without any discussion.
