SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) has drawn the attention of PWD (Roads) Minister Martin M. Danggo to the deplorable condition of roads in certain rural areas of the state.
Speaking to reporters after a delegation of the HANM central body met the minister here on Tuesday, HANM president Lamphrang Kharbani said that the issue of frequent accidents taking place along the Rangthong-Nongnah-Kalong stretch was discussed with Danggo.
“On several occasions, vehicles travelling along the route have fallen into gorges. Even on Monday, a minibus travelling from Mawkyrwat to Nongnah fell into a gorge. The roads need to be improved,” Kharbani said.
Alleging anomalies in the construction of the road that connects Lailad (Borsora) to Nongjri-Nonghyllam till Kulang, Kharbani said that as per the complaints received from the villagers, the contractor from Dhar Constructions claimed the bill for the project without completion of the road. Kharbani urged the minister to follow up on the matter to ascertain the truth.
The HANM also demanded that blacktopping of the PWD road from Umpung to Mawpud village, Phlangdiloin-Wahkaji-Nongtynger-Nongummer stretch among others is done at the earliest.
The pressure group also slammed Mawhati legislator Julius Dorphang for the dilapidated roads in his constituency.
“The Mawhati road is likened to a pond. We want the construction of the road to extend up to Jagiroad for the benefit of the local populace,” Kharbani said.
The HANM president added that Danggo has assured to look into the matter.
